See ya, Sparrow.

So, rumour has it that Johnny Depp has been axed from the role of Captain Jack Sparrow as the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise gets an overhaul.

After fifteen years, the much loved character is being scrapped. If you ask me, it’s about time. All we need now is J.K. Rowling to follow suit, and then the shun can finally begin.

For those unaware, Johnny Depp was accused of domestic physical and emotional abuse of then wife Amber Heard – and after a media frenzy, the couple ended up settling and going through with their divorce.

Now, I grew up during the prime of the Pirates films, I adored and very much fancied Captain Jack Sparrow as well as Johnny Depp. Nevertheless, I had no trouble believing these allegations as soon as I became aware of them. Rumours of Depp’s aggression and anger had made their way online for years, as well as the odd stories of some minor law breaking.

Now, with these stories, the news of the farewell of Captain Jack in particular, have been more or less confirmed, with scriptwriter Stuart Beattie saying “I think he’s had a great run. Obviously, he’s made that character his own and it’s become the character he’s most famous for now.

“And kids all over the world love him as that character so I think it’s been great for him, it’s been great for us, so I’m just very, very happy about it.”

With that in mind, it’s definitely for the best. In my opinion, a person with such allegations and numerous charges against them shouldn’t be given such a position of power and influence over children. Not that I feel Depp has influenced a generation to be alcoholic abusers, but if we don’t make an example of him, where would it end?

I’ll say it again, all we need is solidarity in J.K Rowling and the rest of the casting team for the Fantastic Beasts franchise, and perhaps the rest will follow suit as they see two of the biggest franchises ever putting their foot down. This is where we begin, this is how we close the door and put an end to the powerful boys club of Hollywood.
